In particular, the terms sex discrimination and gender discrimination mean the same when youre speaking in terms of federal civil rights law and anti-discrimination law. So, should you refer to discrimination against women as sex discrimination or gender discrimination? Either works. And is there such a thing as sexual discrimination? Sexual Discrimination Is Not the Same as Sex Discrimination Less commonly used is the term sexual discrimination. This is not the correct term when its simply used to refer to discrimination based on a persons gender. The word se xualis used, however, when youre referring to sexual harassment because sexual discriminationdescribes a type of offense that is sexual in nature. Think of sex as implying gender and sexual as relating to a sexually-oriented activity. Sexual harassment does not solely involve unequal pay, working conditions, or advancement opportunities based on a persons sex or gender, although these can come into play, too. Rather, harassment involves teasing, sexual advances, and unwelcome touching. It mightinvolve jokes or taunting directed at an individual because of her gender. It can include promises of promotion or pay raises in exchange for sexual favors, although sexual harassment is not limited to interactions with the victims employer or supervisor. Co-workers or even a companys clients or customers can be guilty of sexual harassment, and the employers duty is to step in and stop the behavior. The victim and harasser do not have to be of the opposite sex. Sexual Orientation Discrimin ation The term sexual is also used when referring to discrimination against someone for being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer (LGBTQ). In this case, the term sexual orientation discrimination would technically be correct. The victim does not necessarily have to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered. The situation rises to the level of discrimination if the perpetrator acts based on such a belief. No federal laws protect people in general from this type of discrimination,although those who actually work for the federal government are afforded protections. Approximately 20 states have adopted protective laws for gay and lesbian people, and some judges have ruled that behavior aimed at LGBTQ individuals is indeed sex discrimination because the victims were acted against due to the fact that they did not or could not conform to typical gender stereotypes. Gender Discrimination Is Against the Law It is a violation of federal civil rights to deny someone a job, pro motion, equal pay, or opportunity based on their gender. It does not matter if the individual is male or female. Sex discrimination is against the law, as are sexual orientation discrimination and sexual harassment.

4 Tips for Dealing with an Indecisive Boss - The Muse4 Tips for Dealing with an Indecisive BossIf youve ever worked for someone who cant make up his or her mind, you know how frustrating an average day on the job can be. An indecisive boss creates a unique challenge for you as an employee Its tough to build your experience and portfolio when your managers mind changes with the wind. So how do you deal when your coach wont stop wavering and make a damn decision about work and assignments that affect you? Actually, theres quite a bit you can do to help and get things moving.If youre going to overcome an obstacle, it helps to understand what youre dealing with so you can approach it optimally. Likely, one of two things is behind your supervisors indecision his own indecisive boss or fear of failure. Yes, your department head (or CEO, or whoever is in charge) may be equally- if not more- indecisive than the person you work under, which probably makes it hard for him to make a confident d ecision, let alone any decision at all. Factor in insecurity and a worry about failing, and its no wonder youre forever waiting on concrete direction. Once you have a grasp of the hurdles your manager is dealing with, do your best to keep her on track with the following tips. 1. Ask QuestionsOne approach to pushing past a stuckverzierung spot is to ask strategic questions thatll ultimately help your boss clarify the next step. If you inquire as though youre trying to elicit information to help you do your job, your supervisor will have a hard time leaving you hanging. The questions you pose will vary by your industry and the specific project, of course, but the broad examples below will give you an idea for how to get startedWhat is our primary goal?What is our biggest priority? Why?Who are we responsible to? What evidence do we need to demonstrate efficacy?How hard is our deadline? What happens if we dont deliver on-time/in-budget/within expectations?By discussing priorities, clien t expectations, and potential ramifications if a project doesnt go well (i.e., a decision isnt made) youll aid your boss in working through potential snags while being mindful of why its important to move forward. Youll also arm him or her with a logical argument if she needs to sell it to her own indecisive leader. 2. Offer a ProposalAnother way to help a supervisor see past indecision is to propose the course of action you wish to pursue. And I dont mean simply saying, I think we should do this Put together something concrete and well-reasoned and present it to him. It might be a detailed project outline, mock-ups of print materials, a written justification that cites relevant research, or anything else thatll help your supervisor visualize a clear path to the desired outcome. By doing this prep work, your boss wont have to muddle through different options youll have done the hard work for him. Not only will this approach help alleviate your managers fear of making the wrong choic e, but itll arm her with a strong argument to use higher up the chain of command if necessary. This maneuver has the subsequent benefit of demonstrating what a proactive, solution-focused team member you are. 3. Address it Head-onIts possible your boss doesnt realize that she wavers so much, or how much distress it creates for her team when she does so. This person might be in charge, but he or shes also human, subject to the same personal blind spots as the rest of us. So if youve tried more subtle approaches to addressing indecision with little progress, it might be worth a face-to-face meeting so you can lay your frustrations out on the table. As always, avoid accusations and finger-pointing. No human in the history of the human race generally responds well to hostility. Focus on the work, the hurdles that the indecision creates, and what it is that you need from your supervisor. Be clear that you are eager to find a way forward that allows you to be more productive. Remember to incorporate concrete evidence when possible. For example, if you use an app like Toggle to track the time you spend on projects, you can bring that data to your meeting and show exactly how time-consuming frequent changes in direction- or the lack of any direction- really are. Multiply that time by your hourly rate, and you have even more substantial evidence pointing to the expensive cost of indecisiveness. 4. Maintain Perspective and Your ReputationSometimes an indecisive boss will be an indecisive (maddening) manager, no matter what you do. Remind yourself that you cant control everything or everyone. If a project stalls out because he cant decide how to address an obstacle, hes the one whos going to have to face it and figure out a way to keep things moving forward. To avoid any finger-pointing, be sure to document your attempts to be proactive and decisive. If necessary, calmly address your efforts to move past the problem, without including inflammatory remarks or accusatory details. Have a suggestion for how to proceed, and youll continue to present yourself as a solution-and-action-focused professional. Remember that no matter how indecisive your boss is- and no matter how he or she responds to your efforts to address said indecision- you are not powerless. Take control when and where you can, and make sure other key people in your organization are aware of your efforts. When your manager is busy agonizing over a decision that hinders your productivity, look for other tasks to focus on. A simple, quick mention of your accomplishments in conversation or via an email exchange lets others know that youre action-oriented without being obnoxious or negative.If your bosss indecision leads to a complete stand-still in your work, look for opportunities to collaborate across departments. Take a stroll or pick up the phone to chat with your contacts around the company. When, during those conversations, an opportunity arises for you to offer your support on som ething, jump on it. Your determination to be productive and add value to your company will open doors for you, even if your manager stays in his or her own revolving door of indecision. Like getting this website up and running. Making sure youve got content that will help move you to your next level of best, in not one but- count them- SIX areas of your life. Providing workshops for those of you who need more. And it has not been easy. Lawrdy But then change rarely is. But it is CRUCIAL to growth.Some of yall (like those of you who may not have answered TRUE to the majority of questions on the quiz above) are afraid to make changes, especially at work. You take the saatkorn route to the office, sit in the same chair, use the same coffee mug, and have lunch at the same eatery each and every day. Cmon now Switch it UP There is nothing wrong with having a schedule, being consistent, or enjoying stability. What Im saying is, you need to stir the waters a bit in order to grow at work. You cannot be a change-haterThis Friday before you power down your computer, why not make a few simple changes in your work space? Reposition the Gumby and Pokey tchotchkes on your desk. Swap the photos of the ones you love with some you took over the holidays. Move some of those Post-it notes. Better yet, purge things you dont need, and finish some to-do lists so that you canthrow o utthose Post-its. Heres another one. Look at your desk as though today were your last day. What things would you quickly and easily chuck? Are you evah going to wear any of those shoes under your desk? If not, scoop them up and take them to the Goodwill. What about all those books collecting dust? Can they be donated to a local nonprofit organization or a hospital?Keep going. Change your coffee mug Opt for one that makes you smile even when there isnt coffee in it. Reposition your computer. Change the lighting in your space. On Monday, take a different route, bus, or train to work. Make eye contact with andsmileat people you meet en route. Heaven forbid, strike up a conversation with a stranger.Bring in a plant to help bring oxygen into your space, and make it a goal to keep it alive. Dosomethingthat will help refresh your mindset for the next sixty days.Whats the point? Just getting you into the practice of making changes. Once you start making small changes, it gets easier to make bigger ones. Sometimes change is thrust upon you, and other times you have the option of easing into it. If you are easing into making career changes this year by embracing the littlest of changes, when you do get that new job or promotion, your brain will already be in acceptance/ transition mode. In fact, once youve programmed it to look for changes, itll be more prone to seek out that job or promotion on autopilot. How cool is that?Be sure to include clues on your vision board about the change youre working toward. If you want a corner office by next year, include a picture of the chair you want in your office. Or, heck, go all out and get a special eckball Office Calendar that you use to mark off the days, each cross-out getting you closer to the deadline date you identified back in January when you set yourSMART goals.And while youre at it, walk around your office floor with an attitude of change. Chat with people you normally ignore. You never know, they might know of someone whos leaving the role you have your eye on. Coincidence? Perhaps. But strange things happen when you embrace change.
